Thank you, Vogue Philippines, for featuring your oldest-ever cover model: 106-year-old Apo Whang-Od on your April 2023 cover.

According to the Vogue story, Whang-Od is the last mambabatok of her generation. She practices batok, a traditional Filipino tattoo art form. She started hand-poking tattoos at 15 and will continue to do so in the Buscalan village in the Philippines. That is, so long as she can see what she’s doing, she says. Older Kalinga women believe that treasures cannot be carried into the afterlife, but bodily markings can.

Before Apo Whang-Od’s current reign, the record for oldest Vogue cover model was held by Judi Dench, who appeared on the front of British Vogue in 2020, at 85.
